Quizlet - Overview

To succeed in learning a foreign language, students should practice new vocabulary at home for
AT LEAST 10-15 minutes each night, along with revisiting older sets to keep them fresh.

Quizlet is a website and mobile app (free for students) that our department uses to create
online flash card sets with pictures. Here's an overview of the activities:

Learn

Start with the words in Spanish (easier) or English. Type the translations and receive instant feedback.
Students only continue working on incorrect answers.

Goal: Start with English, and translate all terms correctly without using notes.
***Students who meet this goal and practice daily should score very well on their quizzes/tests.***

Speller

For this exercise, a word will be shown in English along with a picture. The Spanish term will be spoken, and students need to write it correctly. This will not only strengthen their recognition of the vocabulary terms upon hearing them, but allow students to become more confident when speaking the words as well.

Test
Students can create their own mini vocabulary quizzes, including translations, matching, multiple choice and true/false questions. They decide how many terms they want to test themselves on, and whether the words will appear in English, Spanish or both.

Scatter
On the website, students will drag the matching words over each other to make them disappear, and attempt to do this as quickly as possible. On the mobile app, students tap the matches instead of dragging them. This activity is great for a short/fun practice, but it isn't the best way to memorize new vocabulary and shouldn't be used exclusively.

Gravity
Students select the desired difficulty level, and choose whether terms begin in English, Spanish, or both (at random). Vocabulary words, written inside asteroids, will
fall from space and students "destroy" them by typing the translation correctly. This is similar to "Learn" except for the pace...if not done quickly, the asteroids will crash into the planet.
